How I Rewired My Brain to Become Fluent in Math (2014,

Sorry, education reformers, it’s still memorization and repetition we need.

There is an interesting connection between learning math and science, and learning a sport. When you learn how to swing a golf club, you perfect that swing from lots of repetition over a period of years. Your body knows what to do from a single thought—one chunk—instead of having to recall all the complex steps involved in hitting a ball.

In the same way, once you understand why you do something in math and science, you don’t have to keep re-explaining the how to yourself every time you do it. It’s not necessary to go around with 25 marbles in your pocket and lay out 5 rows of 5 marbles again and again so that you get that 5 x 5 = 25. At some point, you just know it fluently from memory. You memorize the idea that you simply add exponents—those little superscript numbers—when multiplying numbers that have the same base (104 x 105 = 109). If you use the procedure a lot, by doing many different types of problems, you will find that you understand both the why and the how behind the procedure very well indeed. The greater understanding results from the fact that your mind constructed the patterns of meaning. Continually focusing on understanding itself actually gets in the way.

As studies of chess masters, emergency room physicians, and fighter pilots have shown, in times of critical stress, conscious analysis of a situation is replaced by quick, subconscious processing as these experts rapidly draw on their deeply ingrained repertoire of neural subroutines—chunks. At some point, self-consciously “understanding” why you do what you do just slows you down and interrupts flow, resulting in worse decisions.

Understanding doesn’t build fluency; instead, fluency builds understanding. In fact, I believe that true understanding of a complex subject comes only from fluency.

At 40, Franz Kafka (1883-1924), who never married and had no children, walked through the park in Berlin when he met a girl who was crying because she had lost her favourite doll. She and Kafka searched for the doll unsuccessfully.
Kafka told her to meet him there the next day and they would come back to look for her.
The next day, when they had not yet found the doll, Kafka gave the girl a letter "written" by the doll saying "please don't cry. I took a trip to see the world. I will write to you about my adventures."
Thus began a story which continued until the end of Kafka's life.
During their meetings, Kafka read the letters of the doll carefully written with adventures and conversations that the girl found adorable.
Finally, Kafka brought back the doll (he bought one) that had returned to Berlin.
"It doesn't look like my doll at all," said the girl.
Kafka handed her another letter in which the doll wrote: "my travels have changed me." the little girl hugged the new doll and brought her happy home.
A year later Kafka died.
Many years later, the now-adult girl found a letter inside the doll. In the tiny letter signed by Kafka it was written:
"Everything you love will probably be lost, but in the end, love will return in another way."

@Alimentazione e quello che sta intorno It's also not really that important. This is not about being historically accurate, this is only about the story itself - whether true or not, it has a value in itself.
I agree, the story stands on its own. I enjoy knowing the origin of a work of art, because I often find it enriches it for me somehow. In this case, its obcure origin betwixt a possibly real anecdote from Kafka's life, Davenport's elaboration, and an Internet folk-tale adds to its sweet mystery for me.

Then this lockdown happened. It’s been very hard on children, in particular, so I brought The Ickabog down from the attic, read it for the first time in years, rewrote bits of it and then read it to my children again. They told me to put back in some bits they’d liked when they were little, and here we are!

The Ickabog will be published for free on this website, in instalments, over the next seven weeks, a chapter (or two, or three), at a time. It isn’t Harry Potter and it doesn’t include magic. This is an entirely different story.

When the book is published in November, I’m going to donate all my royalties to help people who have been affected by the coronavirus. We’ll give full details later in the year.

In our adult-centric world, children are almost never considered as interlocutors by adults. Their passive role makes them victims of environmental and institutional violence. This violence - discarding violence in extreme contexts, work, sexual, war - takes place fundamentally in the family and at school. But the city also represses them, leaving them with no space to play or move freely.

One of the most interesting non-institutional initiatives that has recently appeared is that of the Caja de Música scholarships, created and managed by Alicia Murillo from Seville and the patrons who support her. In the Sala Mera, Seville, a multidisciplinary space, boys and girls at risk of social exclusion and victims of violence, learn with the help of music: "Music does not work miracles - says Alicia Murillo - but playing music together makes them trust each other again". And they need to trust the adult world that has betrayed them again. Instead of chairs there are carpets with cushions and toys. And a courtyard without cars...

Parece como si viniera de una cuenta de memes surrealista, pero no, existía de verdad: Teen Boss, la jovial revista empresarial para chicas, que, hasta su último número publicado en diciembre de 2018, proporcionaba todo lo que una preadolescente influencer podría necesitar saber para: “¡CREA TU PROPIO CANAL DE YOUTUBE!”; “¡GANA DINERO RÁPIDO!”; “¡PROMOCIONA TU MARCA SIENDO TÚ MISMA!”.

¿Qué engendro corporativo infernal era el responsable de esto? Pues, en realidad, era la compañía internacional Bauer Media Group, es decir, los creadores de J-14, un tabloide para niños sobre celebridades que se fundó en 1998 y, sorprendentemente, sigue publicándose. Teen Boss era una mutación del género, un tabloide de adolescentes sobre famoseo para una cultura sádica que se rige por la aspiración de hacerse famoso, en una era en la que los códigos sociales que antes solo eran aplicables a los famosos ahora resultan válidos para todos nosotros. Reinterpretaba el estilo propagandístico de Silicon Valley en un soporte mediático antiguo y prometía que ahora tú también podías llegar a ser famosa.
